Understanding Neurodiversity and its Impact on Your District
Neurodiversity is an umbrella term which covers a wide range of learning and behavioural difficulties, including:
It’s estimated that 750,000 Canadian school children are struggling with dyslexia, and the challenge facing these young people is the amount of support readily available within their community and district.
We at Scanning Pens know the importance of ensuring students struggling with literacy have the necessary tools to both read and study with confidence.
The Importance of Early Intervention
Living with dyslexia or other neurodivergent disorders at a young age can prove to be challenging as you make your way through the education system. Certain cognitive and communication skills typically develop during the first three years of a person’s life, so early intervention is the most effective strategy.
Common signs of Dyslexia to look for:
- Memory Lapses
- Fluctuation of mood
- Forgetting starting points
- Low self-esteem
- Reading avoidance
By recognizing any issues early on in their development and starting the relevant support straight away, the better it is for the student.

The Power of Assistive Reading Technology
Scanning Pens has done some amazing work with school boards across the whole of Canada, helping bring our range of reading supports into their institutions. The positive impact of assistive technology cannot be denied. It has created more inclusivity amongst students with learning difficulties, helping to nurture their development and instil a love of reading.
“I had a grade 8 student, who is reading at a level 4, use the ReaderPen™ on Friday to access information from a book. His grade 8 class is discussing the Holocaust and he has shown a great interest. He was excited to be able to “read” the book, and said, “That pen’s pretty cool!”
- Resource Teacher - Simcoe County District School Board
“We currently have 23 ReaderPens that are being used by students with low incidence designations. The ReaderPens are signed out each term throughout the year by different schools. The feedback has been very positive. Everyone says that students K-12 are benefitting from them.”
